Flúðir

About 110 km (68 miles) northeast of Reykjavík. Take Ring Rd. about 11½ km (7 miles) just past the town of Mosfellsbær; turn right on Rte. 36, Þingvallavegur.

Flúðir and its small neighboring towns are the vegetable-growing hub of Iceland due to geothermal heating and fertile white-water rivers. Before the tourist boom in Iceland, Flúðir was mostly known for mushrooms and pleasant weather, but now it is a growing community focused on innovative and sustainable tourism.

GETTING HERE AND AROUND

If you’re completing the Golden Circle at Gullfoss, the route back to the Ring Road at Selfoss has a lot of exciting stops and sights on the way. Most people follow Route 35, which passes through Reykholt, but it’s also possible to take a little detour and visit the charming town of Flúðir. Strætó Buses 72 and 73 also serve Flúðir via Selfoss twice a day.

Flúðir Swimming Pool

HOT SPRINGS | FAMILY | Those who don’t care to splurge on a ticket to the Secret Lagoon may wish to check out the local swimming pool at Flúðir, which also has two nice hot tubs and a natural sauna. E Flúðalaug, Túngata, Haukadalur P 354/480-6625.

Reykholt Swimming Pool

SPORTS VENUE | FAMILY | In the beautiful but unexciting village of Reykholt (not to be confused with the historical town in West Iceland) is a nice swimming pool for relaxing and stretching out. For those who need to blow off some steam, there is a small gym and sports hall in the building. E Reykholt, Biskupstungur, Selfoss P 354/480-3040 C Closed Fri. and Sun.

Secret Lagoon

NATURE SITE | Taking a dip in a natural hot spring surrounded by green fields and a tiny geyser sounds great, but when you add in new showers and cold drinks, it’s almost too good to be true. Locals have left this lagoon largely untouched but have set up new facilities. It’s even more magical during winter, when people sit in the warm water with steam rising all around them. If you’re lucky, the northern lights will put on a show across the sky while you’re there. E Hvammsvegur P 354/ 555-3351 w www.secretlagoon.is A ISK 3,000 x Towel and swimsuit rental available.

Skálholt

HISTORIC SITE | The historic settlement of Skálholt is the location of one of two former episcopal seats in Iceland, and for over 700 years it was the national center of culture, politics, and education. The cathedral has been restored many times, most recently in 1963. A 1954 archaeological excavation turned up a sarcophagus that is believed to contain the bones of one of Skálholt’s most powerful bishops, Páll Jónsson; it is now on display in the basement of the church along with other relics. The cathedral is still a center for music and culture, and it hosts an annual concert series over five weekends in July and August, featuring composers and musicians from all over the world. E Skálholt, Selfoss P 354 /869-1847 w www.skalholt.is.
